Prenatal Pilates in isolation

April 25, 2020

As regular readers of the Premium Pilates & Fitness blog know, we are sharing inspiring prenatal and postnatal journeys of our mumma clients. Our third mumma client is Murphy, who has been a client of ours since November 2018. Murphy's first bub is due on May 26th (one month from today!). Murphy has been so to Pilates throughout her entire pregnancy, including doing online Pilates classes at home during isolation, that I wanted to share her prenatal fitness journey.

PS: Murphy's hilarious husband Tim did some rad photoshopping for us!

1. Murphy, what made you get into Pilates?

When I was training and competing performance horses, and riding trackwork, I began incorporating Pilates into my own training program to improve my core strength, balance and alignment after multiple injuries. Years later, I used Pilates to get toned for my wedding and now it is helping my body get baby ready.

2. I remember how sick you were in the beginning of your pregnancy - what motivated you to keep coming to class?

My options were a) feel nauseous in class or b) feel nauseous at home on the couch. I did have to slow down in HIIT workouts and Barre classes, and on multiple occasions in Matwork Pilates classes I just had to sit and let the nausea pass, but staying active had such a positive impact on me, both mentally and physically.

3. What do you love most about Premium Pilates and Fitness's Prenatal Pilates online classes ?

I love that I can still be guided through workouts that I know are safe for my current stage of pregnancy whilst staying at home, and I can do them at any time of the day!

4. What's your favourite exercise or muscle group to work in Pilates?

It used to be core exercises, now I struggle to even find my core muscles *cry/laughing face emoji*. I love the feeling of conquering a core exercise that I used to find difficult.

5. What would you tell those prenatal mums to be out there that are a little scared to exercise whilst pregnant?

Most people are aware of the benefits of staying active during pregnancy, but when you don't have a safe, supportive place to workout and you don't know where to begin, just knowing the benefits doesn't give you any direction on what to actually do. Premium Pilates and Fitness has the knowledge, experience and a fantastic team that kept me feeling safe, supported and confident in the exercises I was doing though out every stage of my pregnancy.

6. How are you staying active, while still practicing social isolation? Any tips for other mummas to be?

As the physical distancing restrictions keep changing, so does my activities. At the moment, I'm taking our fur baby for lots of walks and doing Premium Pilates and Fitness's Prenatal Pilates online workouts, of course! Shooting some hoops with hubby in the afternoons is also good fun, but of course I'm avoiding taking any jump shots!

We wish you all the best for meeting your little one Murphy! We know it must be very emotional giving birth to a bub in these uncertain times, but your positivity will help you so much!
