Is Matwork Pilates Harder Than Reformer?

January 19, 2023

Whether you are a long-time Pilates enthusiast or find yourself curious about what this "Pilates" thing is all about, it may surprise you to learn that Pilates was a person before becoming a trendy form of exercise. Joseph Pilates is the creator of Pilates, originally developing over 600 Matwork exercises before inventing the apparatus of the Reformer.

The driving theory of his approach, "Contrology," is the idea that we can exercise the entire body in harmony, rather than simply training specific muscles. Joseph’s invention took off in the 1920’s with springs and straps attached to hospital bed posts, a method of rehabilitation for soldiers with injuries. The invention of the Reformer provides an accessible method for those with less mobility to build their strength.

Sound familiar? You may have already read our blog Matwork Vs Reformer: What are the Differences? In this blog we unpack the benefits of both Matwork Pilates and Reformer Pilates, to answer the much anticipated question - which is harder?

Let’s break it down in this blog with a matrix!

So... Which Pilates Class is Harder?

There’s no need to agonise over the decision; with some consistency, both modalities will increase your strength, balance, flexibility and overall happiness.

What we will say is that Matwork Pilates is an excellent choice for beginners. Just like Joseph Pilates began, this form of exercise focuses on learning how to manage your muscles and control them with the strength and balance of your own body. But don't be fooled: advanced mat workouts are often the most difficult since you're constantly working your body and the reformer isn't there to aid or support you.

Psst! There is no reason why you should have to choose between the two. What’s important is that you discover what you enjoy and what revives your body and mind.

Our advice at PPF is this: participate in both Matwork and Reformer classes for the greatest outcomes! Balance is the key to success.
