Is Reformer Pilates Hard?

February 25, 2025

Reformer Pilates has taken the fitness world by storm–– but does it live up to the hype? Is it challenging enough? Who benefits? Let’s dive into these questions with me, Zoe, a Pilates instructor here at Premium Pilates and Fitness!

What Is a Reformer, Anyway?

If you’ve never seen one before, a reformer looks a bit like a single bed frame with a moving carriage, springs, straps and a footbar. Originally designed by Joseph Pilates to rehab injured soldiers, it’s now a versatile tool for people of all fitness levels building strength, mobility and body awareness.

Does Reformer Pilates Live Up to the Hype?

Absolutely! ✅ One of the best things about Reformer Pilates is its accessibility–– with exercises that can be modified for more support or extra challenge. Expect to move in ways that support your everyday activities, improve posture, and enhance strength in a way that feels natural (but still makes your muscles shake!).

And don’t worry about figuring it out alone—your Premium Pilates instructor will guide you through each exercise, cueing form, breath, and alignment to help you connect with your body. And if you’ve ever taken a class with an instructor who ‘forgets’ to count reps… Well, we promise it’s not personal! 😆

Who Benefits the Most?

Short answer: EVERYONE!

Longer answer: Whether you're recovering from an injury, pregnant, navigating a new stage of life with changing mobility needs, new to exercise, or an experienced mover, the reformer offers something for you.

The spring resistance provides strength-building benefits similar to weight training but in a more controlled and supportive way, making it great for those managing injuries or looking to protect joints. It’s also an excellent option for post-menopausal women 🦴 who want to maintain bone density, improve balance, and preserve muscle mass without high-impact exercise. Beyond strength, reformer Pilates helps with flexibility, coordination, and postural alignment—all essential for staying active and moving well as we age.

Is it hard enough?

Yes, yes, and YES. 🙌

Like anything, the effort you put in determines the challenge. Reformer Pilates can be as gentle or as challenging as you make it. If you engage your muscles, focus on control, and push yourself within your limits, you’ll absolutely feel the burn.  🔥

That being said, the goal isn’t to leave you completely exhausted or unable to function the next day. At Premium, we specialise in well-balanced reformer classes that challenge your muscles while also incorporating mobility work, breath awareness, and recovery stretches. You’ll likely sweat a little, shake a bit, and feel muscles you didn’t know existed—but you’ll also walk away feeling stronger, taller, and more connected to your body
