Hi everyone! Leah here, instructor and sales at PPF I'm here to talk you to about how we set goals! Clients constantly ask us how they can achieve their goals, whether they be fitness, mental health, weight loss or healthy eating related.
Setting goals both big and small can be the actions we take towards our happiness. How we set goals can make a big difference to achieving them. Have you ever set a goal only to lose momentum? We are all guilty of this, even instructors!
Why are we setting this goal?
Before we start putting down steps to achieve our goal/s, we need to understand our WHY.  Why are we setting this goal? Â
Our why needs to be a significant desire we are invested in for our overall happiness. Losing a few pounds because you want to fit into that dress over losing a few pounds to live longer, run with our children or reduce our risk of a chronic illness becomes much more important to us because our WHY is significant. Â
Don't get me wrong; for some amazing dresses, the WHY behind them can be motivating....but you will be more likely to reach your goal if the why behind it is important and significant.Â
The pattern for successÂ
No matter how large or small our goals are the pattern for success is the same. I call it working BACKWARDS to go FORWARDS.Â
1. DECIDE on the goal
The big bold fancy goal….as big or small as you like. The goal should be something you are interested in and are passionate about. Something you want to do just for you, with a strong sense of WHY you want to achieve that goal behind it.Â
2. WRITEÂ
Documenting your goals increases your chances of success. Write the goal then write how it will look like and how you will feel once that goal is reached. Visualise yourself achieving your goal as you write.
Write in terms of timelines and be specific! For example, you may find that the big goal requires many small goals to get you to the final outcome. You may set stepping goals in order to achieve your larger goal. It helps if the first goal is a little beyond what we currently do or have. Goals that stretch us motivate and help grow us!
3. TELL SOMEONEÂ
Telling someone keeps you accountable and they can motivate you to keep going. You have that person to talk to about your achievements and your struggles. This person may also give you feedback in a way you had not thought of. “A problem shared can be a problem halved..
4. PLAN
A Chinese proverb says that a journey of 1000 miles starts with one step. Go back to your written goal. Assess the steps you need to get this done. Add this to your list. This step can be placed almost anywhere through your journey. If you find yourself steering for the trees instead of on the straight and narrow go back to the steps required. You may find that you add steps and other small goals through your journey.Â
5. KEEP GOING
When the process becomes difficult or frustrating take a moment to take stock of what you have achieved. See how many steps you have already reached. Reassess and redo the steps if you feel you need to.Â
6. CELEBRATE!
When you reach each goal, thank the people who have encouraged you and celebrate in some small way. A trip to the movies, an afternoon off at the beach. Whatever makes you feel like you are rewarding yourself. Â
When we achieve our goals, no matter what they are, we feel a sense of great achievement. So whatever your goal may be, we hope this post has given you some tools to start!
